I have to admit I strongly agree with the main 3 values AA upholds. I feel that we should loves ourselves and our fellow man and that we should strive to make the world a better place for all humans. I feel that religions aim to control and are tools for the manipulation of people and tools used by those in power. But this is not a problem inherent in religion rather a problem inherent in those that aim to control. However, many people need religion. They may not have the critical ability to distinguish right from wrong on thier own. Maybe there are those that without telling them that hurting people is wrong would go around raping and stealing and doing such things because they love themselves. The golden rule is do unto others as you would have others do unto you. This I believe, not in jihad, not in prayer and not in giving $ to the church. However, many religious organizations do strive to help the fellow man and love the fellow man. They provide soup kitchens and shelters. Is this so wrong? While I do not belive in religion I do believe in a greater being. Something had to begin everything no matter how much evidence there is for evolution or other life in the universe. It could not just come out of nowhere. And while there is great pain in the world. There is greater beauty, 99% of the people in this world just want happy, simple lives and the best for thier families regardless of religion. There is more good in the world and we have a choice. How much blood has been shed in God's name.

To the former Mormon: I believe that you are right in that you cannot discern truth from falsehood from your subjective feelings or a "fire burning in you bosom." No one should have blind faith in anything. But keep in mind that, as human beings, we cannot comprehend even a small percent of the complex truth that is out there in the universe.

Why, electricity wasn't even aroun until around 100 years ago, give or take a few decades. Knowledge has increased exponentially in the last 100-150 years in medicine, science, etc. However, I believe that there is still a lot to learn--things that will really blow our minds. I believe that energy is neither created or destroyed. Where did energy come from? It was ALWAYS THERE (awesooommmmeee!!!!!) I believe that the Universal Mind was, is, and always will be this energy. I don't know if you've heard of things like this, but I hope it gives you something interesting to think about and respond to. God bless you.

To Randy Meyers who asked this question (posted Oct.21) "Why do you consider it unlikely or illogical for the heavens to declare the glory of God as the master designer?"

Going by your logic, I'd like you to tell me who created your God ("master designer"-your term). I suppose your God has a grandfather and grandmother....master designer's parents' parents.

Just because you don't know where we came from, doesn't mean that you have to make a potshot guess...God in this case. Also, referring to your statement that the "heavens declare(d)the glory of God as the master designer"- did the heavens really do that? ---I ask tongue-in-cheek.

The president of Finland (Tarja Halonen) has presented in her secret speech a genocide of the Finns at Maarianhamina on April 21, 2001. Halonen's speech violates the ROME STATUTE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT, Article 6, Genocide (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Halonen's intent is to destroy a national and ethnical Finnish group by transferring Finnish children to another group. Extreme nationalist writer Jörn Donner in newspaper "Johnny Kniga" 6 / 2003 thought that the Finnish language and its speakers should have be destructed in the 19th century.

Hey this is an article I found while doing a school assignment.....and it pisses me off, not only because I'm an atheist, but because It's kinda sorta against everything that 'freedom of beliefs' bit in the Bill of Rights stands for.....but, what's news? I thought I'd post this cause I wsn't sure what else to do with it. This is a nice site and it's cool to know that I'm not alone.....

Roger Jones, the mayor of Greenville County, Tenn., is asking all 95 counties in the state to proclaim "God as the foundation of our national heritage." Jones himself has a copy of the Ten Commandments posted in his office.

Other counties are following Jones' lead. Trousdale County commissioners, for instance, unanimously passed his proclamation.

I am not sure if you are going to consider this disrespectful according to the guidelines you laid out on the webpage. I guess you will edit it out if you do find it disrespectful. It's not my intent to be disrespectful, but rather to pose this scenario and question. Also, I apologize in advance if you answer this question a lot. I am a new visitor to your website.

I love going to the different Smithsonian museums here in DC. I totally appreciate the artwork and inventions on display. It's amazing how much talent, time, effort, thought and care went into these great achievements. Great works all have a designer behind them. Great as they are, they pale in wonder to living creatures, the world . . .to the universe. Therefore, my question is: Why do you consider it unlikely or illogical for the heavens to declare the glory of God as the master designer? Thank you again for your time and consideration.

Indonesia guy, if u dont like Islam or Christianity, become Jewish the rest of you, religion has calmed the minds of millions of people for thousands of years and for you to not acknowledge the peace that religion HAS given people compared to the amount of conflicts that have risen, then you're an ignorant fool. Without well-moraled religion, how would the masses deal with their lives? They would use violence. They would use their irrational idea of justice to their advantage. If you would like to live in this sort of "State of Nature" , go to whatever you beleive is your Utopia and dont bring what has helped millions of people over the years into this.

I attended the atheism vs. christianity debate via satalite at a church. I was assuming it would make me feel spiritual and probably bad for leaving church. Instead it did the oposite, it made me see how naieve christians really are. I never saw so many people hear only what they wanted to, behave so closed minded, and it was totally one sided. I chose to stay away from it cause it just breeds hate. I've had people go apeshit on me for saying I'm not a christian. They scare the hell out of me, these people are some of the most nastiest people you will ever meet. Always hiding behind the church so they can get away with murder basically. No matter how horrid they behave, they honestly believe that it's ok, and no need to apologize, cause god has forgiven them. Now that's scary. I feel sorry for them cause they're brainwashed and out hurting peoples feelings plus have no remorse for their own behavior. It just leads to trouble. I feel that I'm a better person being atheist. I don't judge others, and I do acts of kindness out of compassion not cause I want brownie points at church. It's a shame christians are so full of hate and anger.

The American Atheist rep. illustrated how the South, in particular, is not entirely composed of snake handling evangelicals who profess a distorted version of US history. The founding fathers, if believers at all, were deists. We must have our wonderful “public” government schools to thank for this perverted misconception held by the masses. I am glad to see American Atheists on the web. I have been god-free since high school, and remember the days I fondly read the American Atheist magazine to which my friend at Texas A&M University had a subscription.

To me, religion makes so much more sense when we acknowledge that it was created entirely by humans, reflecting their fears, desires, and (mis)conceptions of a physical world not yet understood.

I read some of the messages from theists in this guestbook and could only grin. I always get a chuckle out of hearing someone say he/she is a "proud Christian". Do they forget that pride is a sin, or at best, a vice, according to their religion? But, then, inconsistency has never been a stranger to the religious.

Anyway, folks, keep up the good work!

The Profane and Sacred are two sides of the same coin with no monetary value. The coin of Reason and Logic will sustain our Civilisation. To me, Atheism has always been just a framework from which to empirically evaluate and decipher the material world and the eternal quest of humanity to eke a meagre existence in a world devoid of emmanent conscious purpose. Of course, meaning and purpose is generated by the collective social values of the various cultures around the world.

I have been made to feel uncomfortable because of my beliefs(or lack of them) It's good to know that there are other people smart enough not to base their life on superstition & primitive explanations of the universe.

I'm glad this organisation exists - I've been an atheist since I was nine years old. Mostly I resent the idea that atheism means you have no awe or wonder at the universe - the more I learn about science, my wonder multiplies.

I was just reading the "A paranoid nation" article, and from whatelse I read on this site and other Athiest sites. I must say, Athiests really try to force their beliefs on everyone, pretty ironic if you ask me. That Athiests claim religions are bad because of the violence they cause, and yet, while not violent, it seems few Ahtiests can let religions be at peace, rather trying to destroy everything they are.

This coincides with the "A paranoid nation" which talks about Masonry, masons believing in God, do you really think you can contend with an organization that survived the persecutions of the Catholics since the 1300s, that have survived the fires of other nations, and that has given birth to the Mighty America? Just an observation.

Atheists can no longer afford to hid in the closet while the world is engulfed in a frenzy of religious destruction by fanatics in turbans and our rights are trampled by fanatics in ties. Religion is dangerous. Thanks for your site.

Well, I've been with many Atheist and religious people in my life. Some Atheist were good people and some were nasty. Some religious poeple were very decent people and others nasty. I've learned to judge people by their actions and not by their religious views.

In Belgium, atheïsm is now deeply rooted in the community, in is teached in our schools and it is the primary faith of my society. But all its teachings backfire: the 'open mind' becomes amorality, criticism becomes selfjustification, 'freedom' becomes extreme individual freedom, not in the name of peace, love and truth; always in the name of egoïsm, wealth, and the overpowering of the other. This unconditional freedom creates the primitive society Hobbes talked about: a society of all people for themselves, against everyone else. Don't fall into this other extreme like we've done here. Don't be an agressive dogmatic, but don't be a reductionist atheist either. I see God as Spinoza saw him, as one, all and neverchanging, as the only and complete truth, as the only thing that is without not-being. From this belief, I can read the koran, the veda, the bible and many other religous metaphorical writings, and enjoy them as poetical attemps to talk of God. The religous mindset is the culmination of our humanity, without it reality becomes unreal and the individual mind becomes the only measure of things. Clicking the attached link might show a more nuanced view on things.

Here's an oxymoron for you...God bless this site. :) I don't agree with what you teach about God and Jesu on this site, but it made me look deeper into God's word, and I grew stronger as a christian. Not exactly the reaction you were looking for, eh? Hope you learn to see the truth. God is awesome! Ashley

The world is a better place if we just could be able to get rid all global religions. Come on, I mean we have had complete wars over religions, and now those without are being prejudiced against.

Excellent site, good work guys. I personally an not an Atheist, but I certainly am NOT a christian. I have my own beleifs about God and the afterlife, beleifs which I have based on science and philosophy and I like to think are more rational than the Christian outlook. I hope that one day the USA will seperate the church and the state; for having a fundamentalist christian in the White House is no better than having that Islamic guy, Iatola "Im a big fuckwit" whatever he's name is in Iran. We will know the truth one day and then we can put this Christianity SHIT to bed once and for all. Kepp it up guys

The Congress and the Executive of the United States of America, by House Joint Resolution, passed into Public Law 102-14, which has mandated that the United States is a Federal sanctioned Religion of Talmudic Judaism, thus breached all arguments, sham fights of empty eloquence, to the seperation of Church and state, thus furthermore breaking the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States of America.
