“Organized religion is a sham and a crutch..”

JESSE TOLD IT LIKE IT IS -- AND HE DESERVES OUR SUPPORT!

America finally may have a politician who is able to speak his mind honestly, and not be captive to spin-doctors and poll watchers. And atheists finally have a leading political figure who isn't afraid to use the "A-word," and is an outspoken defender of the separation of church and state. Remember, last summer Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura refused to endorse the National Day of Prayer event, while other public officials were busy calling upon citizens to pray and humble themselves before god.

Ventura is now under fire for remarks he made in an interview for the upcoming issue of Playboy Magazine. He termed organized religion a "sham and a crutch for the weak minded," and blamed it for telling "people to go out and stick their noses in other people's business." He also made other statements -- some of which are being reported out of context -- that you may or may not agree with.

But now, Gov. Ventura is being attacked as a "bigot" because he does not profess the politically-correct obsequious and favorable opinion about organized religion. Some are demanding that he resign from his office. At the Christian Coalition "Road to Victory" conference, Pat Robertson and others critized Ventura for "blasphemy" and disrespect for religion.

Shouldn't we take a stand, and support Jesse Ventura?

We frequently talk about all of those millions of Americans -- nearly 10% of the population by some accounts -- who are atheists, freethinkers, agnostics, skeptics, or use some other term to describe our lack of religious belief. Maybe it's time to translate that 10% into something tangible -- like speaking out in defense of a major American political figure who distinguishes himself by not calling for a "partnership" between government and religion, and who unambiguously identifies himself as an atheist.

That is why AMERICAN ATHEIST MAGAZINE and POSITIVE ATHEISM MAGAZINE are joining in this campaign to urge you to show your support for Gov. Jesse Ventura. Here's what you can do to help...
